Gujarat Invests Rs 177 Crore to Boost India’s Solar Rooftop Capacity to 56.8 MW

In a significant step towards boosting its renewable energy portfolio, the Gujarat government has earmarked Rs 177 crore to install 48 MW of solar rooftop systems on state-owned buildings this fiscal year. The project, spearheaded by the Climate Change Department, is part of Gujarat’s larger strategy to tap into its abundant solar resources.

By March 2024, the state aims to have 3,023 solar rooftop systems fully operational across various government departments, collectively generating 56.8 MW of power. This move aligns with Gujarat’s ongoing efforts to lead the charge in India’s renewable energy landscape.

In the 2023-24 period, Gujarat has already produced an impressive 24,765.3 million units (MU) of renewable energy. Solar power contributed 9,637 MU, while wind energy accounted for 14,201 MU. Smaller contributions came from hydroelectric power, small hydro plants, biomass, and bagasse.

Over the years, Gujarat has gained recognition for its ambitious solar projects, including the Charanka Solar Park, and has championed rooftop solar installations in households. The state’s renewable energy capacity has further been bolstered by developing coastal wind farms, solidifying its position as a key player in India’s green energy revolution.
