Al Rayan Masjid Becomes First Mosque In The World To Achieve LEED ZERO Certification

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced that Al Rayan Masjid in Hatta has become the first place of worship in the world to achieve LEED ZERO certification. This certification marks a significant step in sustainable development, highlighting Dubaiโ€™s dedication to environmental innovation. The mosque aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and supports Hatta’s social, economic, and environmental growth. DEWAโ€™s CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, emphasized that the mosqueโ€™s achievement reflects the city’s commitment to sustainability, contributing to the goal of reaching Net-Zero by 2050.

The mosque generates 150% of its annual energy needs through high-efficiency photovoltaic panels installed on its parking structure and ablution area. The energy produced exceeds the mosqueโ€™s requirements for lighting, air conditioning, and other electrical systems, with the surplus returned to the grid. This makes Al Rayan Masjid a net positive energy building. It was initially recognized in 2021 when it received LEED v4 Platinum certification with a score of 83 points from the U.S. Green Building Council. Now, it has achieved LEED Zero Energy certification, further reinforcing its leadership in sustainable architecture.

Al Rayan Masjid aligns with Dubai’s goal of becoming a global leader in clean energy and the green economy. DEWA remains focused on energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and improving the quality of life in the emirate. The mosque, which covers 1,050 square meters and can accommodate over 600 worshippers, meets top environmental standards. It features a 25-meter-high minaret, parking facilities, and amenities for people with disabilities, as well as an electric vehicle charging station. Solar panels and a water treatment unit have also been installed to reuse water for cleaning and irrigation. Recycled materials were used in construction, and an advanced air purification system ensures a healthy indoor environment.
