Jordan’s Ministry Of Energy Expands Rural Electrification Projects, Bringing Power To Remote Communities

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has expanded its rural electrification initiatives through the “Fals Al-Rif” program, bringing electricity to villages and rural communities across Jordan. Established under the 1977 electricity tariff, the program aims to deliver reliable power to areas outside municipal boundaries, using regular grids and renewable energy sources.

Since 2011, the Ministry has implemented a series of projects through the Directorate of Electricity and Rural Electrification, which has provided electricity to 32,270 homes located outside organizational boundaries at a cost of JOD 86 million. This initiative supports underserved communities by ensuring fair access to electricity, improving living conditions, and reducing electricity costs for low-income families.

Solar Power Solutions for Agriculture and Remote Homes

Among the key initiatives is the installation of solar cell systems for artesian wells used in agriculture, providing sustainable irrigation solutions to remote farms. Nine solar systems have been installed at a cost of JOD 156,575, allowing farmers to reduce their reliance on diesel-powered irrigation systems, cutting operational costs, and promoting job creation in rural areas.

Additionally, the program has installed off-grid solar systems for 122 poor households located far from the national electricity grid. This project, valued at JOD 633,767, ensures that families living in remote areas have access to electricity, helping to prevent rural-to-urban migration and stabilize communities.

Grid-Connected Solar Systems for Low-Income Families

The Ministry also implemented a project to install on-grid solar systems for homes of beneficiaries of the National Aid Fund, aiming to reduce electricity bills and improve living standards for low-income families. The project, which covers 7,380 beneficiaries, was completed in four phases at a cost of JOD 7.7 million.

Boosting Local Economies and Supporting Key Sectors

The Rural Electrification Directorate’s initiatives have not only provided power but also supported local economies. By encouraging local contractors and industries to invest in solar energy systems, the program has stimulated job creation and economic growth in rural communities. Electricity coverage in Jordan has now reached 99.9%, highlighting the success of these efforts.

The Ministry has also supported the tourism and production sectors by providing electricity to 18 sites, investing JOD 5.69 million. In agriculture, nine projects have been supported with JOD 626,252 in funding, promoting pasture rehabilitation and improving livestock production.

These rural electrification projects, which are exempt from fees, reflect the Ministry’s commitment to improving the lives of rural communities and supporting Jordan’s national development goals.
