The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) has officially handed over a transformative renewable energy project in Ribeira Alta, located on Cabo Verde’s Santo Antรฃo island. The initiative, funded by the ECOWAS Special Intervention Fund (ESIF), marks a significant advancement in providing sustainable electricity to one of the country’s most isolated regions.

The handover ceremony was attended by key figures, including representatives from ECREEE, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, local government officials, project promoters, and community leaders. This project exemplifies the ECOWAS region’s commitment to overcoming energy access challenges and fostering sustainable development in underserved areas.

Ribeira Alta, known for its rugged terrain and geographic isolation, has long struggled with energy access. The newly implemented renewable energy system features state-of-the-art solar power installations combined with energy storage solutions, designed to meet the community’s electricity needs sustainably.

โ€œThis project is a milestone in our mission to expand renewable energy access across West Africa,โ€ stated Mr. Claudino Mendes, Sustainable Energy Expert at ECREEE. โ€œBy addressing the energy needs of remote communities like Ribeira Alta, we are making strides toward greater energy equity and sustainable development in the ECOWAS region.โ€
