In July 2024, India reached an important milestone in renewable energy, with solar power accounting for nearly half of the country’s renewable energy production. Solar energy contributed 43.96% of the total renewable generation, reflecting the country’s growing focus on sustainable energy. The total installed renewable capacity, excluding hydropower, reached 152.654 GW.
The rapid increase in solar power is evident, with an installed capacity of 89.43 GW. This growth has been driven by government initiatives and policies that support clean energy development. Wind energy also played a significant role, contributing 39.88% of the renewable energy generation with a total output of 10,356.35 million units in July. India’s wind energy installed capacity stands at 47,192.33 MW, highlighting the country’s vast wind resources and ongoing investments in wind energy projects, and contributes 43.96%.
In addition to solar and wind, biomass, bagasse, and small hydroelectric projects together contributed 5.37% to renewable energy generation during the month. This mix of renewable sources is helping reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels and contributing to a more diversified energy system. Overall, the country’s renewable energy generation for July, excluding hydropower, reached 25,967.96 million units.
India’s focus on expanding renewable energy aligns with international sustainability goals and efforts to mitigate climate change. By investing in solar, wind, and other renewable sources, India is working towards reducing carbon emissions, improving energy security, and supporting economic growth. The strong growth in solar and wind power generation reflects the success of government policies and technological advancements that have made clean energy more accessible and affordable.
