Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) has signed a three-year collaborative research agreement with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) focused on advancing hydrogen energy and energy systems. The partnership aims to contribute to carbon neutrality efforts, particularly addressing Singapore’s unique energy challenges.
The agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony at the Singapore-Korea Business Forum held at the Ritz Carlton Singapore on October 8. The event featured key attendees, including Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company; Young-Joon Yoon, President and CEO of Hyundai Engineering & Construction; and Hyun Sung Park, Vice President and CEO of the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS). Representatives from NTU and government officials from Singapore and South Korea were also present.
Hyun Sung Park highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating, โHMGICS is a global hub for Hyundai Motor Groupโs future mobility innovation. Through this partnership, we aim to accelerate our research in the field of innovative technologies, ultimately enhancing the commercial viability of our sustainable mobility solutions.โ
As a city-state, Singapore faces significant challenges in achieving carbon neutrality, with natural gas accounting for 95% of its power generation. The collaboration seeks to explore alternative energy sources tailored to Singaporeโs specific needs, particularly in the hydrogen sector.
Key research areas will include the adoption of hydrogen production technologies. Hyundai’s innovative Plastic-to-Hydrogen (P2H) and Waste-to-Hydrogen (W2H) systems will be implemented in Singapore. W2H utilizes organic waste, such as food and sewage sludge, for hydrogen production, while P2H focuses on non-recyclable plastic.
The partnership also aims to develop advanced energy systems suited for urban environments like Singapore, offering easy installation and high safety through modular designโessential for achieving the city-state’s carbon neutrality goals.
In addition, HMGICS announced a joint signing ceremony to establish a tripartite research center with NTU and the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR). The Corporate Lab Program will focus on innovative manufacturing areas, including AI, robotics, and 3D printing.
Professor Lam Khin Yong, Vice President (Industry) of NTU, commented, โThe research partnerships between NTU Singapore and Hyundai Motor Group reflect how close collaboration with industry is vital in developing innovative solutions to address real-world issues, including the race to carbon neutrality.โ
This collaboration underscores HMGICS’s commitment to transformative manufacturing and customer experiences. The strategic partnership aims to foster world-leading, sustainable mobility solutions that benefit both Singapore and the global community, advancing technology for a greener future.
