HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently welcomed Jens Kerstan, Minister of Environment, Energy, Climate and Agriculture of Hamburg, Germany, at DEWAโ€™s headquarters. The meeting underscored DEWAโ€™s commitment to building global partnerships for sustainability, renewable energy, and climate action. The discussions focused on possible collaborations between Dubai and Hamburg to speed up the green energy transition, address climate change, and share best practices in environmental sustainability.

Al Tayer emphasized Dubaiโ€™s clean energy and sustainable development goals, reflecting the UAEโ€™s leadership vision for a green economy. DEWA aims to support the UAEโ€™s Net Zero by 2050 Strategy, Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, all of which target 100% of Dubaiโ€™s energy production from clean sources by 2050. A major part of this vision is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which, by 2030, will produce over 5,000 MW through photovoltaic panels and concentrated solar power. With an investment of AED 50 billion, this solar park will reduce Dubaiโ€™s carbon emissions by over 6.5 million tonnes annually.

Al Tayer also highlighted DEWAโ€™s achievements, noting that it currently ranks first globally in 12 key performance indicators. In 2023, Dubai reduced line losses in electricity transmission to 2.0%, far below the 6-7% typical in Europe and the USA, and water network losses to 4.6%, compared to around 15% in North America. DEWA also set a global record for electricity Customer Minutes Lost, with only 1.06 minutes per customer, much lower than the average 15 minutes seen in European utilities.

He also discussed Al-Sheraโ€™a, DEWAโ€™s new headquarters, which will be the worldโ€™s tallest, largest, and smartest government Zero Energy building. This headquarters, designed to achieve LEED Platinum and WELL Building Gold ratings, will use advanced technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The building will feature photovoltaic panels and solar trees that will help it reach a 5 MWp capacity, supporting its net-zero goals.

Senator Kerstan shared Hamburgโ€™s progress in sustainable energy and environmental policies, emphasizing the cityโ€™s commitment to a low-carbon future. He praised Dubaiโ€™s achievements in renewable energy and expressed his enthusiasm for future collaborations that could benefit both cities.
