UAE and Brazil Forge Strategic Renewable Energy Partnership with Landmark Agreements and Global Sustainability Initiatives

Renewable energy and sustainability took center stage as His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Brazilian President Luiz Inรกcio Lula da Silva held an official meeting to discuss bolstering ties between the two nations. The discussions highlighted joint efforts to enhance cooperation in renewable energy, reflecting their commitment to global environmental goals.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed the progress of bilateral relations, emphasizing renewable energy and sustainability as key areas of focus. The leaders discussed initiatives aimed at expanding collaboration in green energy projects, recognizing the importance of leveraging the UAE’s advanced expertise in solar and wind energy and Brazil’s abundant natural resources.

Strategic Agreements to Boost Green Energy

Two significant agreements were signed during the meeting. The first, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance UAE investments in Brazil’s strategic sectors, including renewable energy, was signed by UAE Minister of Investment Mohammed Hassan Al Suwaidi and Brazilian Minister of the Presidency Rui Costa.

A second MoU, focused on joint cooperation in Africa, was signed by UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashimy and Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira. This agreement aims to support renewable energy projects across the African continent, promoting sustainable development.

Mutual Environmental Commitments

President Lula praised the UAE’s initiatives to support Brazilโ€™s environmental goals, including the planting of 10,000 palm trees in Bahia through a partnership with Al Foah Company. He also acknowledged the UAE’s backing of Brazil’s G20 programs, such as the Global Alliance to Fight Hunger and Poverty and efforts to protect tropical rainforests.

The two leaders discussed enhancing customs cooperation under the existing agreement between Abu Dhabi Customs and the Brazilian Tax Authority. This includes a proposed digital trade corridor to streamline the movement of goods and support sustainability through efficient trade practices.

UAE at the G20 Summit

Sheikh Khalid will lead the UAE delegation at the 19th G20 Leadersโ€™ Summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19, 2024. The Crown Princeโ€™s participation follows an invitation from President Lula to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.
