Indonesia’s Energy Transition Commitment

Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Special Envoy of the President of Indonesia at COP29, emphasized President Prabowo Subianto’s strong commitment to tackling climate change.

“Global climate change requires a global solution. Collaboration is the only way forward,” Hashim stated, while highlighting Indonesia’s ambitious strategy to add 75 GW of renewable energy capacity over the next 15 years.

President Prabowo’s strategy also ties the energy transition to economic goals, aiming for an 8% growth rate and poverty eradication, according to Hashim.

Highlights of the Partnerships

  1. Green Funding with UKEF
PLN and UKEF will explore renewable energy financing opportunities, particularly for transmission networks integrating clean energy sources. UKEF will also assist in capacity building for PLN employees.
  2. Energy Transition with KfW
The German development bank KfW will finance projects such as Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plants and conduct Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) studies to ensure sustainable implementation.
  3. Hydrogen Transportation with TGI and Sembcorp
A Joint Development Framework Agreement was signed to develop a green hydrogen transportation project, utilizing TGI’s pipeline infrastructure to transport hydrogen from Sumatra to Singapore.

PLN’s Vision for Collaboration

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo reiterated the importance of global partnerships for Indonesia’s sustainable energy transition.

“We cannot do it alone. Through collaboration, we aim to reduce emissions, create jobs, and play a key role in global efforts to save the planet,” Darmawan said.

Darmawan also highlighted PLN’s ongoing efforts to diversify green energy sources and enhance Indonesia’s regional role in hydrogen ecosystems and cross-border energy trade.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

The partnerships underline PLN’s commitment to achieving sustainability while addressing energy access challenges in isolated regions. The initiatives reflect Indonesia’s dedication to creating a clean, equitable, and sustainable energy future.
