ReNew, one of India’s top renewable energy companies, has successfully started operations for 750 MW out of a planned 1 GW solar project in Rajasthan. The project uses solar panels made by ReNew at its facilities in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and Dholera, Gujarat, supporting the Make in India initiative. This step aligns with the company’s vision of helping Rajasthan become self-reliant in electricity production.
The project is being executed in partnership with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) through three Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). The electricity generated will be supplied to the state. While 750 MW is now operational, the remaining 225 MW is expected to be completed by January 2025. This milestone reflects ReNew’s dedication to advancing India’s clean energy goals and Rajasthan’s progress toward energy independence.
Sumant Sinha, Founder, Chairman & CEO, ReNew, expressed his views on the development, “This ~1 GW solar project highlights our commitment to delivering scalable renewable energy solutions that are both impactful and sustainable. ReNew is playing a pivotal role in supporting Rajasthan’s growth story while advancing India’s vision for energy independence. Projects like this are not just about clean power, they represent a pathway to local economic growth, job creation, and the long-term resilience of our energy infrastructure.”
ReNew has invested around ₹21,000 crore (~USD 2.5 billion) in Rajasthan for completed and ongoing renewable energy projects. This investment is expected to grow significantly as part of an MoU with the Government of Rajasthan, under which ReNew plans to invest ₹62,000 crore by 2030. This initiative positions ReNew as one of the largest private-sector investors in the state.
A key highlight of this project is its focus on localisation, with 90% of the solar panels made in Rajasthan and 100% manufactured within India. ReNew’s advanced facilities in Jaipur and Dholera produce about 17,000 solar panels daily using cutting-edge automation, catering to large utility projects and urban rooftops. These operations have created over 1,500 direct jobs and an equal number of indirect opportunities, boosting the local economy.
Rajasthan plays a crucial role in ReNew’s renewable energy portfolio, with a total capacity of over 10 GW, including operational, under-construction, and pipeline projects, of which 4+ GW is already operational. ReNew’s overall pipeline exceeds 23 GW, spanning renewable energy projects, storage solutions, and auction wins. As of November 2024, the company has achieved an operational capacity of around 10.4 GW, with an additional 6 GW committed, further cementing its leadership in India’s clean energy sector.
