UK-Saudi Partnership: Advancing Clean Hydrogen and Sustainable Energy Growth

The United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing sustainability, with a strong emphasis on clean hydrogen technologies, as part of a broader effort to deepen their economic partnership. During an official visit by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to Saudi Arabia, both nations outlined an ambitious agenda aimed at achieving sustainable growth and addressing global challenges.

A joint statement issued at the conclusion of the visit highlighted the pivotal role of clean hydrogen in the bilateral relationship. Saudi Arabia and the UK pledged to collaborate on developing clean hydrogen policies, regulations, and business models to accelerate its adoption as a cornerstone of sustainable energy.

Clean Hydrogen Collaboration

Acknowledging the transformative potential of clean hydrogen, the two countries agreed to establish a Clean Hydrogen Consortium, led by Newcastle University and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. This initiative will focus on advancing research, capacity building, and policy development to position clean hydrogen as a key driver of the global energy transition.

The leaders also stressed the importance of creating robust standards and regulations to facilitate the production and application of clean hydrogen. Saudi Arabiaโ€™s Vision 2030 and the UKโ€™s Industrial Strategy were identified as critical frameworks supporting the integration of clean hydrogen into their economies.

Driving Sustainable Growth

Both sides emphasized the role of renewable energy, green minerals, and clean technologies in enhancing global supply chain resilience. Saudi Arabiaโ€™s Global Supply Chain Resilience Initiative, along with the launch of five special economic zones, offers significant opportunities for British companies to invest in renewable energy, hydrogen production, and electric vehicles.

In addition, UK Export Finance announced plans to increase its market exposure to $6 billion, further supporting projects that align with clean energy and sustainability goals.

Green Energy Commitments

The two nations commended ongoing cooperation in the energy sector, particularly in renewable energy and sustainable technologies. This includes advancing Saudi Arabiaโ€™s Circular Carbon Economy approach, which aims to reduce emissions while fostering economic growth.

The UK welcomed Saudi Arabiaโ€™s leadership in global climate initiatives, such as the Saudi Green Initiative and Middle East Green Initiative. As part of their joint efforts, the UK and Saudi Arabia reaffirmed the importance of integrating sustainability into all aspects of their partnership. From clean hydrogen development to investments in renewable energy and sustainable industries, the collaboration aims to create lasting economic and environmental benefits for both nations.

Prime Minister Starmer expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended during his visit, emphasizing the mutual aspiration to build a sustainable future through innovative and strategic partnerships.
