Hynfra, a Polish company, has announced plans to establish a green ammonia production plant in Egypt with an initial investment of $1.6 billion. The announcement was made by Hynfra CEO Tomoho Umeda during a meeting with Hossam Heiba, CEO of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI).

The new facility, located in Egypt, is part of Hynfraโ€™s broader strategy to supply green ammonia to Eastern and Central Europe. Umeda revealed that the Egyptian plantโ€™s initial production capacity will be 100,000 tons of green ammonia annually, with the first phase of construction expected to be completed by 2030. The project is designed with scalability in mind, with the potential to increase production to one million tons annually.

Reliance on Renewable Energy

The green ammonia plant will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources, including Egyptโ€™s abundant solar and wind power. Umeda emphasized that the facilityโ€™s daily energy output will meet the plantโ€™s energy needs, with any surplus electricity being supplied to Egyptโ€™s national grid, thus supporting the countryโ€™s push for greater reliance on renewable energy.

A Focus on Innovation and Expertise Transfer

Hynfra also plans to transfer its technical expertise to Egypt, particularly in areas such as green hydrogen production, renewable energy storage systems, electrolyser technologies, and desalination. The company aims to produce green hydrogen through water electrolysis, which will then be combined with nitrogen at high temperatures to produce green ammonia, all powered by renewable energy sources.

Long-term Investment and Export Plans

Hussein Fouad El Ghazzawy, executive partner of Hynfra in Egypt, confirmed that the total investment in the project is expected to rise to $10.6 billion, with the production capacity eventually reaching one million tons annually. He also stated that all of the projectโ€™s output will be exported to the European Union, highlighting the strategic importance of the facility in meeting Europeโ€™s green ammonia demands.

The project marks a significant step in Egyptโ€™s renewable energy ambitions and represents a major commitment from Hynfra to advance green ammonia production, which is a key component in reducing global carbon emissions.
