French renewable energy company Voltalia SA has commenced construction of the Spitalla solar farm, a 100-MW project located in the Durres region of Albania, the company announced on Monday.
Situated along the Adriatic coast, less than 50 kilometers from Tirana, the Spitalla solar farm will supply electricity through two long-term agreements. Voltalia secured a public contract in 2021 for 70 MW of the capacity, while the remaining 30 MW will cater to private sector buyers.
Once operational, the solar plant is projected to generate sufficient electricity to meet the annual needs of over 150,000 residents. Commissioning is planned for the second half of 2027.
Voltalia will oversee the development, operation, and ownership of the facility. This marks the companyโs second major project in Albania, following the 140-MW Karavasta solar farm, which was commissioned in December 2023.
