Dubaiโ€™s commitment to sustainability and renewable energy took the spotlight during His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoumโ€™s recent visit to Hatta. The Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai reviewed significant projects under the Hatta Master Development Plan, part of Dubaiโ€™s Vision 2030 and Economic Agenda D33, which aims to position Dubai as a global leader in sustainable living and innovation.

Advancing Sustainability in Hatta

Sheikh Mohammed assessed the progress of 65 projects valued at AED 3.6 billion, with 41 already completed. Highlighting the importance of environmental stewardship, His Highness stated, โ€œOur objective is to make Hatta a global model for harmony between humans and nature, driven by innovation in sustainable development.โ€

Central to these initiatives is the integration of renewable energy solutions, including solar power projects under Dubai Electricity and Water Authorityโ€™s (DEWA) Shams Dubai program. These initiatives contribute to both economic growth and environmental conservation, aligning with Dubaiโ€™s broader sustainability goals.

Unveiling the Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls

A key highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls project. Designed by DEWA, the attraction features a cascading waterfall powered by clean energy from the nearby Hatta Dam. The installation is further complemented by the worldโ€™s largest mosaic panel, certified by Guinness World Records, crafted from 1.2 million pieces of natural marble.

The project not only enhances Hattaโ€™s tourism appeal but also promotes local investment opportunities by providing retail and F&B spaces to Emirati entrepreneurs free of charge.

Renewable Energy Projects in Focus

During the visit, Sheikh Mohammed reviewed several groundbreaking renewable energy projects. These include:

  • A 250 MW hydroelectric power plant, the first of its kind in the region.
  • A new water reservoir, bolstering sustainable water management.
  • Solar energy initiatives expanding under the Shams Dubai program, which aims to harness clean energy for residential and commercial use.

These projects underscore Dubaiโ€™s leadership in renewable energy and its dedication to achieving a sustainable future.

Tourism and Infrastructure Enhancements

Infrastructure upgrades in Hatta include plans for a residential neighborhood, a state-of-the-art school, and expanded mountain biking trails. Additionally, the regionโ€™s first 5.4-kilometer cable car will connect Hatta Dam to Um Al Nesoor Peak, Dubaiโ€™s highest natural summit, enhancing accessibility while preserving the environment.

A Model for Sustainability

His Highnessโ€™s visit concluded with a call for public and private sector collaboration to maximize Hattaโ€™s potential as a global hub for sustainable tourism and clean energy innovation. With these transformative initiatives, Dubai continues to lead by example in addressing environmental challenges and fostering socio-economic growth.
