The Ministry of Water Resources in Somalia has issued a tender for the development of a 10 MW hybrid solar-plus-storage plant, part of the Somali Electricity Sector Recovery Project. The project, which includes the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of a 10 MW solar plant with a 20 MWh battery energy storage system and a 33 kV evacuation line, is located on 290 hectares in Garowe, Puntland.
The project is being developed for the National Energy Corp. of Somalia, one of the countryโs largest utility companies, and is financed by the World Bank. A pre-bid conference for the project is scheduled to be held virtually on January 23, 2025, with the application deadline set for February 10, 2025.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Somalia had deployed 51 MW of solar energy by the end of 2023, up from 47 MW in 2022. This new hybrid solar-plus-storage project is part of Somalia’s ongoing efforts to boost its renewable energy capacity.
In November 2024, a separate tender was also issued for the development of 25 off-grid solar-plus-storage plants at health facilities across two regions of Somalia, furthering the country’s commitment to enhancing its renewable energy infrastructure.
