Solarcentury Africa Limited and Zambiaโ€™s Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) have signed a Heads of Terms agreement to co-develop a 67 MWp solar power plant in Chisamba, Central Province. The project will connect to the ZESCO backbone, supporting Zambiaโ€™s ongoing efforts to address power shortages with sustainable energy solutions.

According to the agreement, IDC has already secured the project site and conducted initial technical studies, while Solarcentury Africa will oversee development, design, funding, and project execution.

Solarcentury Africa, a key player in the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP), has been expanding its merchant solar portfolio across Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia. The company recently completed the first 25 MW of the 100 MW solar project in Kanona, Serenje District, which is set for commissioning in Q2 2025. It also plans to install up to 500 MW of solar capacity in the region over the coming years.

The new project is expected to provide electricity primarily to IDCโ€™s industrial users, alleviating power shortages that have impacted business operations and economic growth.

Jason De Carteret, CEO of Solarcentury Africa, emphasized the projectโ€™s role in enhancing Zambiaโ€™s energy security, stating, โ€œWe are excited to collaborate with IDC to develop sustainable solutions that will support Zambiaโ€™s economy and industrial sector.โ€

Cornwell Muleya, CEO of IDC, highlighted the projectโ€™s alignment with Zambiaโ€™s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which aims to increase renewable energyโ€™s share in the countryโ€™s energy mix. โ€œThis project is a testament to our commitment to supporting Zambiaโ€™s industrialization agenda and reducing reliance on fossil fuels,โ€ he said.

By leveraging Zambiaโ€™s abundant solar resources, the initiative aims to drive economic growth, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance long-term energy security.
