ACWA Power Signs Key Agreements with Aramco to Drive Renewable Energy and Innovation in Saudi Arabia

Saudi utility giant ACWA Power has signed two significant agreements with Aramco aimed at advancing renewable energy projects and assessing the performance of vanadium flow batteries in Saudi Arabiaโ€™s climate. The agreements were announced during ACWA Powerโ€™s third flagship Innovation Days event.

The first agreement focuses on the development of an advanced photovoltaic energy forecasting project, utilizing big data analytics and machine learning to improve solar power generation predictions. By enhancing forecasting accuracy, the initiative aims to strengthen grid stability, optimize energy dispatch, and improve microgrid management.

The second agreement centers on testing the efficiency and durability of vanadium flow battery technology under Saudi Arabiaโ€™s climate conditions. This initiative will assess the long-term energy storage capabilities of the batteries, with a particular emphasis on supporting the increased use of renewable energy for water desalination.

These efforts are in line with Saudi Arabia’s strategic goals to promote clean energy and foster collaboration in renewable and hydrogen technologies, supporting the Kingdomโ€™s role in the global energy transition.

โ€œBy investing in cutting-edge desalination technologies alongside renewable energy innovation and green hydrogen production solutions, we are paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable energy and water infrastructure in Saudi Arabia,โ€ said Thomas Altmann, Executive Vice President for Innovation and New Technology at ACWA Power.

In addition to the agreements with Aramco, ACWA Power has signed four other agreements with international organizations. These include partnerships with UK-based Bluewater Bio, global chemicals producer Dow, Australian hydrogen electrolyzer manufacturer Hysata, and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

ACWA Power and Bluewater Bio will collaborate to test advanced filtration technology for desalination projects, while the agreement with Dow will explore the use of anti-scaling chemicals in desalination processes at ACWA Powerโ€™s pilot facility.

A pilot agreement with Hysata will focus on advancing cost-effective green hydrogen production, demonstrating the companyโ€™s high-efficiency electrolyzer technology in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, ACWA Power and KAUST have extended their master research agreement to strengthen their partnership in sustainable solutions for desalination and solar energy.

These initiatives further solidify Saudi Arabia’s commitment to technological advancements and its leadership in the global shift toward renewable energy and sustainable water solutions.

ACWA Power also signed a framework agreement with Fraunhofer IMWS, Fraunhofer ISC, and Fraunhofer IWES to initiate a strategic collaboration in renewable energy and green hydrogen research and development. The collaboration aims to drive innovation in clean energy technologies, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in the global energy transition.

The announcements were made at the inaugural three-day Innovation Days event held in Riyadh from February 3 to 5. Under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy, the event brought together over 1,000 delegates, including government dignitaries, industry leaders, innovators, researchers, and academics. The gathering focused on accelerating new technologies and contributing to Saudi Arabiaโ€™s Vision 2030 for a sustainable and innovative energy future.
