The Albanese Government has activated three new community batteries in New South Wales, aiming to reduce energy costs and enhance power reliability for households in Maloneys Beach, Leeton, and Goulburn. The initiative, part of the Community Batteries for Household Solar program, is set to provide direct cost-of-living relief, with eligible homeowners receiving an annual discount of approximately $75 on their energy bills for the next five years.
The savings will be applied directly to retail electricity bills as a credit, similar to existing Commonwealth energy relief rebates. The move comes as Australia surpasses four million rooftop solar installations, highlighting the growing adoption of clean energy solutions.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen emphasized the role of community batteries in stabilizing the energy grid and maximizing the benefits of renewable energy. โThe rain doesnโt always fall, but we always have water on tap because we store it for when we need it โ community batteries will do the same thing with reliable and affordable renewable energy,โ Bowen stated. He added that the government is delivering immediate cost-of-living relief while building a future-ready energy grid.
The newly commissioned batteries, operated by Essential Energy, have a storage capacity of 530kWh and can produce 192kW of power. These units absorb excess solar energy during the day and redistribute it to homes during peak demand hours, reducing the strain on the electricity network and helping to lower overall energy tariffs.
Local representatives welcomed the initiative, highlighting its positive impact on households. Kristy McBain, Member for Eden-Monaro, noted that the battery in Goulburn would provide much-needed financial relief while improving energy efficiency. Fiona Phillips, Member for Gilmore, praised the community-driven effort in Maloneys Beach, emphasizing the importance of storing clean energy for later use.
The federal government continues to promote renewable energy solutions, positioning community batteries as a key component in its broader strategy to transition towards a more affordable and sustainable energy system.
