Apex Clean Energy announced that Great Kiskadee Storage, a 100 MW/200 MWh battery facility with a two-hour duration, is now operational. This marks the first active project of SA Grid Solutions, a joint venture formed in early 2024 by Apex, SK Gas, and SK eternix.
Ken Young, CEO of Apex Clean Energy, said “Great Kiskadee Storage marks a significant milestone in our partnership with SK Gas and SK eternix, demonstrating the strength of our collaboration and shared commitment to advancing energy storage solutions. This facility will play a crucial role in enhancing grid reliability in Texas, absorbing excess electricity during periods of high generation and providing power back to the grid when demand increases.”
Great Kiskadee, a battery storage facility in Hidalgo County, Texas, is the first of several planned projects under a joint venture aiming to expand utility-scale energy storage. The next project, similar in size and duration, is already lined up for purchase. Apex will oversee all aspects of development, construction, operations, and optimization for both current and future sites.
Built by Saber Power Services, the facility will help stabilize the Texas power grid while boosting the local economy, generating over $12.6 million in tax revenue throughout its lifetime. It also includes grant funding to restore 200 acres of wetland in the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, benefiting migratory birds, bats, and other wildlife.
