IEEFA Spotlights Indonesia’s Renewable Energy and Supply Chain Potential at Mandiri Investment Forum

Indonesia should prioritize renewables and battery technologies as key investments to mitigate energy and currency market volatility, said Grant Hauber, Strategic Energy Finance Advisor for Asia at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), during the 2025 Mandiri Investment Forum.

The Forum, co-hosted by Bank Mandiri and Mandiri Sekuritas in Jakarta, brought together senior Indonesian officials, global experts, and foreign institutional investors. Hauber’s session, “Fueling Innovation: New Directions in Energy Policy,” featured panelists from PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Pertamina, and SKK Migas.

Hauber emphasized that Indonesia’s new government faces a pivotal moment, noting that renewables, energy efficiency, and electrification can stimulate economic growth while offering affordable investment opportunities.

IEEFA’s report highlighted Indonesia’s untapped solar potential, noting that the country’s current energy plan includes the region’s lowest near-term solar expansion targets despite abundant resources.

Hauber noted that hundreds of megawatts of solar power can be deployed within six to 12 months, unlike other power projects that take years. He highlighted that many countries in the region are already leveraging this advantage.

However, attracting large-scale private investment requires streamlined and transparent processes to unlock the necessary capital for Indonesia’s energy transition.

IEEFA’s commentary emphasized that delivering gigawatt-scale projects annually over the next decade demands a new strategic approach.

“To foster a welcoming environment for renewable investments, Indonesia must implement consistent, fair, and transparent procurement and bidding processes,” Hauber advised.

Addressing dignitaries’ concerns, Hauber dismissed the impact of President Trump’s recent withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on Indonesia’s climate goals.

He concluded that staying engaged with the Paris Agreement community would offer Indonesia a valuable platform to showcase its potential.
