The country’s first commercially-approved standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is set to become operational soon at Kilokri, South Delhi, according to a statement by power distribution company BSES on Monday.
The 20 MW battery storage system, installed at the 33 KV substation of BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), is expected to start functioning by the end of March or early April. Of the 12 liquid-cooled batteries planned for the project, nine have already been installed, while the remaining three will be in place shortly, BSES confirmed.
Once fully deployed, the BESS is expected to enhance power reliability for approximately one lakh residents in Kilokri, a densely populated and low-income area in South Delhi. The storage system will supply electricity for four hours daily, with two-hour power backups each during the day and night.
The project is being implemented in partnership with IndiGrid and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). According to BSES, this initiative will play a significant role in India’s clean energy transition by supporting the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid.
Designed with a lifespan of 12 years, the system will use Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) batteries, known for their advanced safety and efficiency. The BESS will help manage fluctuations in electricity demand, improve grid stability, and reduce overloading issues.
The system will charge during off-peak hours using surplus or low-cost electricity and discharge power during peak demand, reducing reliance on expensive market purchases. BRPL aims to share insights from the project with other power distributors and regulatory bodies to drive similar innovations in India’s power sector.
