Himachal Pradesh is set to become a green state by 2027, with a strong emphasis on renewable energy and electric vehicles (EVs), Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced in his budget speech.

The state is prioritizing clean energy, with a goal of ensuring that 90% of its total power consumption (around 14,000 million units) comes from renewable sources. To achieve this, 626 MW of solar projects are under development. Additionally, 100 panchayats will receive 500-500 kW solar projects under the Green Panchayat Scheme.

Recognizing the transport sectorโ€™s contribution to 16-20% of greenhouse gas emissions, the government has initiated the replacement of old buses with electric ones. In the next financial year, 500 e-buses will be procured, and government offices will gradually shift to EVs, starting with Hamirpur district. A 40% subsidy will be provided for purchasing e-vehicles.

Other initiatives include the “Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana”, promoting afforestation and sustainable farming practices. The government is also advancing drone technology, with plans for drone taxi services and drone stations in Hamirpur, Mandi, and Kangra.
