Saudi Green Initiative Advances Environmental and Sustainability Goals

The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) continues to drive substantial progress in environmental protection and sustainability, reinforcing the Kingdom’s commitment to climate action and ecological preservation. Marking the anniversary of its launch on March 27, SGI Day highlights Saudi Arabia’s achievements in tackling climate change and advancing sustainability on both local and regional levels.

Since its inception in 2021, the SGI has spearheaded 86 initiatives and programs, backed by investments exceeding SAR 705 billion across various green economy sectors. The initiative focuses on reducing carbon emissions, expanding afforestation, and protecting land and marine ecosystems, aligning with the objectives of Vision 2030 to build a sustainable economy and improve the quality of life in Saudi Arabia.

Major Achievements in Afforestation and Land Rehabilitation

The SGI has made significant strides in afforestation and land restoration, with more than 115 million trees planted and 118,000 hectares of degraded land rehabilitated across the Kingdom. These efforts contribute to the long-term goal of planting 10 billion trees and restoring over 74 million hectares in the coming decades.

Carbon Emission Reduction and Renewable Energy Expansion

A key priority of the SGI is carbon emission reduction, with Saudi Arabia targeting a 278 million tons per annum (mtpa) reduction by 2030 as part of its net-zero emissions strategy. To support this, the Kingdom has integrated 6.6 gigawatts of renewable energy into its national electricity grid, with ongoing projects totaling 44.2 gigawatts in capacity.

In 2024, Saudi Arabia launched new renewable energy projects with a 20-gigawatt capacity, reinforcing its goal to increase renewable energy’s share in the national power mix to 130 gigawatts by 2030. The country aims to achieve an optimal electricity generation mix of 50% natural gas and 50% renewable energy within the decade.

Wildlife Protection and Conservation Efforts

The SGI also prioritizes biodiversity conservation, with efforts focused on protecting 30% of Saudi Arabia’s land and marine areas. Currently, 18.1% of terrestrial regions and 6.49% of marine areas are under protection. Additionally, over 7,000 endangered species have been successfully reintroduced into nature reserves, including the Arabian oryx, Arabian mountain gazelle, and ibex.

Saudi Arabia remains committed to its proactive role in global climate action, implementing large-scale sustainability projects under SGI to enhance environmental protection and build a greener future. The initiative continues to align with the Kingdom’s broader goals of economic diversification and sustainable development, setting a precedent for regional and global environmental leadership.
