India-Thailand Renewable Energy Ties in Focus as PM Modi Set to Attend BIMSTEC Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Thailand from April 3-4 to participate in the 6th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit. The visit is expected to reinforce bilateral cooperation, with a particular emphasis on economic collaboration and renewable energy investments.

As part of his official engagements, Modi will hold talks with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on April 3. The discussions are likely to cover trade, investment, and future partnerships, including the growing role of clean energy in strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

Thailand’s investments in India have increased significantly in recent years, with renewable energy emerging as a key sector. A major milestone in this collaboration came in 2021 when Global Renewable Synergy Co., Ltd. invested $453.29 million in India’s renewable energy industry—the largest-ever Thai investment in the sector.

Bilateral trade between India and Thailand stood at $16.04 billion in 2023, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce. Indian exports to Thailand were valued at $5.92 billion, while imports from Thailand totaled $10.11 billion. Renewable energy components, electric vehicle technologies, and clean energy solutions are expected to play a greater role in future trade agreements.

The two countries continue to strengthen economic ties through initiatives such as the India-Thailand Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA), which are aimed at enhancing trade facilitation. ASEAN and India are currently reviewing AITIGA to improve its effectiveness.

As India and Thailand expand their partnership in renewable energy and sustainable trade, the upcoming BIMSTEC Summit is expected to provide a platform for further collaboration in the clean energy transition.
