IndiGrid Powers Up Delhi With India’s First Regulated Utility-Scale Standalone Battery Energy Storage System

IndiGrid, India’s leading Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) in the power sector, has announced the commissioning of the country’s first regulated utility-scale standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. The project, known as Kilokari BESS Private Limited (KBPL), has been set up in Delhi and has a capacity of 20 MW / 40 MWh.

This project marks IndiGrid’s first commercial venture into the battery storage segment and represents a major milestone in India’s energy transition journey. The KBPL project has been developed to integrate renewable energy into the distribution-level grid system more effectively. It will play a key role in stabilizing the grid, managing peak power demand, and addressing various ancillary services essential for a resilient power supply.

The project was awarded to IndiGrid in October 2023 by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL). The successful commissioning of KBPL in record time was made possible through the support of BRPL, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Ampere-hour Energy (AHE), and other partners. Their collaboration has been instrumental in bringing the project to completion efficiently.

IndiGrid owns and operates a diversified portfolio of assets across India, covering transmission lines, solar generation, and now battery energy storage systems. Over the past few years, the company has expanded into greenfield projects and undertaken significant expansion initiatives. Since its entry into new project development, IndiGrid has commissioned six projects under both the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) and Regulated Tariff Mechanism (RTM) frameworks for transmission and battery storage systems.

With the commissioning of KBPL, IndiGrid has further strengthened its project execution capabilities and continues to meaningfully expand its presence across the power sector. This development underscores IndiGrid’s commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient power infrastructure for the future.
