Trina Storage, a globally recognized leader in energy storage solutions, has joined forces with FlexGen, a top provider of battery energy storage systems and energy management software, to deliver a landmark 371 MWh battery energy storage system in Houston, Texas. Developed by SMT Energy, this project represents Trina Storageโs largest grid-scale deployment to date in North America, and marks a pivotal moment in the companyโs strategic expansion within a rapidly growing regional market driven by increasing energy demands from data centers, artificial intelligence applications, and electrification initiatives.
At the heart of this project is Trina Storageโs advanced Elementa 2 solution. This state-of-the-art system is engineered to enhance energy performance, ensure reliability, and reduce operational risks. Through a long-term services partnership with FlexGen, Trina Storage is guaranteeing sustained asset reliability. FlexGen will handle system integration and deploy its proprietary HybridOSโข energy management software, which empowers operators to seamlessly manage system performance, quickly identify and resolve issues, anticipate maintenance needs, and boost overall operational efficiency.
Diane Giacomozzi, Chief Operating Officer at FlexGen, said in a statement, โThis collaboration with Trina Storage and SMT Energy represents another major step in accelerating the deployment of flexible energy storage assets to meet growing demand. By pre-integrating FlexGen HybridOS with Trina’s Elementa 2 energy storage solution in our Durham Innovation Lab, we’re enabling faster project delivery and optimized performance from the first moment of operation.โ
Terry Chen, Vice President, Trina Storage North America, stated, โThis project is a testament to Trina Storage’s ability to provide a fully bankable, integrated energy storage solution that meets the evolving needs of the market. As our first grid-scale deployment in North America, this achievement reflects the industry’s confidence in our technology and our commitment to de-risking energy storage investments and supporting the energy transition in the region.โ
The project has garnered strong financial backing, with investment support from prominent equity and tax offtake partners, including Macquarie and KeyBank. This financial endorsement highlights investor confidence in Trina Storageโs scalable and resilient solutions, while reinforcing the systemโs long-term value and robust investment profile in the energy storage sector. Designed to streamline complexity and speed up deployment, the Elementa 2 solution integrates directly with FlexGenโs HybridOSโข platform.
“This project reflects SMT Energy’s commitment to delivering bankable, high-performance storage solutions by uniting world-class technology partners to meet the growing demands of a rapidly evolving grid,โ commented David Spotts, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of SMT Energy.
This combination not only optimizes performance and asset longevity but also sets a new benchmark in reliability and operational excellence for large-scale energy storage deployments. As Trina Storage continues to expand its footprint across North America, this Houston project stands as a powerful example of how integrated, forward-thinking energy storage systems can support the evolving needs of a modernized grid. Interested stakeholders can engage with Trina Storageโs team of energy storage experts at ACP Cleanpower in Phoenix, Arizona, next month to learn more about how the companyโs innovative solutions can support future projects.
