In a bold move to advance its sustainability agenda, Axelum Resources Corporation, a leading exporter of coconut-based food products, has signed an agreement with First Gen Corporation to source 5.2 megawatts of geothermal power for its Misamis Oriental manufacturing plant.

The deal, announced on Tuesday, marks a significant step in Axelumโ€™s transition toward renewable energy, leveraging the Philippinesโ€™ geothermal potential to support its export-driven operations. The clean energy will be supplied from First Genโ€™s Mt. Apo Geothermal Power Plantโ€”underscoring geothermalโ€™s role as the only renewable energy (RE) source capable of providing uninterrupted 24/7 baseload power.

โ€œThis initiative is a cornerstone of our sustainability agenda,โ€ said Henry J. Raperoga, President and Chief Operating Officer of Axelum Resources Corp. โ€œBy adopting geothermal energy, we are reducing our carbon footprint, improving energy reliability, and reinforcing our long-term climate resiliency goals.โ€

The partnership is facilitated by the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) of 2001, which allows companies like Axelum to directly procure electricity from preferred suppliers. This not only ensures stable and cost-effective energy but also encourages a more competitive and transparent power sector.

First Gen, a leader in clean energy solutions, currently holds 60% of the countryโ€™s geothermal generation capacity. โ€œIt is an honor to support Axelumโ€™s mission to make coconut manufacturing more sustainable,โ€ said Carlo Vega, Chief Engagement Officer of First Gen. โ€œGeothermal power is uniquely suited for industrial operations due to its constant availability and minimal environmental impact.โ€

Axelum has long championed a zero-waste manufacturing modelโ€”using coconut shells as fuel for steam production and implementing a reforestation program to restore coconut tree populations. The integration of geothermal power further aligns with this circular strategy by minimizing fossil fuel dependence and enhancing environmental stewardship.

As global markets increasingly favor climate-conscious suppliers, Axelumโ€™s investment in renewable energy is expected to strengthen its competitive edge while setting an industry benchmark for sustainability. The move also signals growing momentum for renewable energy adoption among Philippine manufacturers.
