Prometheus Hyperscale And XL Batteries Join Forces To Install Long-Duration Energy Storage At U.S. Data Centers

XL Batteries, a company developing a new kind of safe, affordable, and reliable battery for large-scale energy storage, has entered a multi-year partnership with Prometheus Hyperscale, a leading builder of sustainable hyperscale data centers. Together, they will deploy on-site, long-duration energy storage systems at Prometheus data centers.

With global energy use from data centers expected to rise by up to 165% by 2030, and the electric grid facing increasing pressure from aging infrastructure and variable renewable energy sources, on-site storage is becoming essential for maintaining reliable 24/7 data center operations. These facilities also require advanced battery systems that can adapt to large and sudden changes in computing power needs. XLโ€™s long-duration, non-lithium battery technology will be used at Prometheus sites to store and deliver energy directly where itโ€™s needed, helping stabilize power demands during heavy compute loads.

As part of the first phase of the collaboration, XL Batteries will install a 333-kilowatt demonstration-scale Organic Flow Battery at a Prometheus facility in 2027. This will be followed by a commercial-scale 12.5 megawatt / 125 megawatt-hour system in 2028, and another of the same size in 2029. Both companies share a long-term goal of expanding the use of XLโ€™s battery technology across more Prometheus locations, reinforcing Prometheusโ€™ leadership in building resilient and sustainable data centers.

XLโ€™s Organic Flow Battery is built with patented organic molecules that are non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive, making it a strong fit for Prometheusโ€™ environmentally focused approach. The battery chemistry also uses raw materials that are widely available and sourced from diverse regions, helping protect Prometheus from potential supply chain disruptions and price spikes linked to geopolitical issues.
