LONGi, a globally recognized leader in photovoltaic technology, has announced a new partnership with Rafiqui, a Mexican non-profit organization focused on developing recycling solutions for decommissioned solar modules. The collaboration, which also includes other stakeholders from Mexicoโ€™s energy sector, aims to build the necessary infrastructure to support large-scale recycling of solar panels in the country. This initiative addresses a critical gap in Mexicoโ€™s solar industry, where recycling options for used photovoltaic modules remain extremely limited. By partnering with Rafiqui, LONGi is taking a significant step toward promoting sustainability and the principles of a circular economy within the solar sector.

The lack of proper recycling systems in Mexico presents an increasing challenge for solar developers, operators, and installers, especially as more solar systems reach the end of their operational life. The partnership is designed to offer a responsible and practical solution for managing decommissioned panels, thereby reducing environmental impact. Notably, LONGi is the first solar module manufacturer to be directly involved in such an effort in Mexico, highlighting its leadership and commitment to environmental responsibility in the region.

This initiative complements LONGiโ€™s broader global efforts to promote sustainable practices in solar energy. The company has previously supported similar projects, including the certification of SunR, a Brazilian photovoltaic recycler, and its involvement with the International Association for Recycling of Photovoltaic Cyclesโ€”marking the first organization of its kind in Latin America. LONGi also holds global photovoltaic recycling certifications in countries such as China, the United States, and several European nations, enabling the company to foster a strong culture of circular economy across its international markets.

The collaboration with Rafiqui aligns with LONGiโ€™s “Solar for Solar” philosophy, which envisions using solar energy to power sustainable solutions within the industry itself. By directly addressing recycling challenges in Mexico, LONGi is helping to establish new standards for environmental best practices in Latin America. This move not only benefits its local customers but also reinforces LONGiโ€™s global reputation as an innovator in responsible solar development.

Moreover, the initiative supports the companyโ€™s broader sustainability goals, as outlined in its recently released 2024 Sustainability Report. The report notes several key achievements, including a 9.14% reduction in electricity consumption per unit compared to 2023, 47.5% adoption of renewable energy across operations, a 24.8% decrease in water use per unit, and a non-hazardous waste recycling rate of 82.7%, surpassing its 80% target. LONGiโ€™s involvement in the Rafiqui project is a continuation of its commitment to leading the clean energy transition with both social and environmental responsibility at the core.
