The National Climate Risk Assessment Report and National Climate Adaptation Plan confirm what many have feared: dangerous climate change is already affecting communities and ecosystems, with costs expected to rise if decisive action is not taken.
Smart Energy Council Chief Executive John Grimes welcomed the release of the reports, praising the Albanese Government for highlighting the risks and urging stronger climate action.
“The Smart Energy Council and its members have long been at the forefront of helping Australia—and the world—decarbonise its energy systems to combat the worst impacts of fossil fuels,” Grimes said.
He announced a renewed commitment to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy and called on governments, businesses, and individuals to do the same.
“We must work harder to meet the goals we have set and stop climate change from escalating threats to all of us. That means rapidly expanding renewable energy and ending new coal and gas projects, including extensions of existing mines,” Grimes stated.
He stressed that collective action is vital, adding, “If we act now, we can minimise the risks identified in this report and build a safer, more secure future.”
The Council also reiterated its call for the federal government to set an ambitious emissions reduction target for 2035, emphasizing that “the time for talk has passed; the time for action is now.”
Grimes concluded, “One of the best and most rapidly deployable methods to cut carbon and methane emissions is renewable energy, and along with our members, we stand ready to make that happen.”
