Visayan Electric Co., the country’s second-largest power distribution utility, is stepping up investments to enhance Cebu’s power reliability through network upgrades, digital innovations, and preventive maintenance measures.
At the Power Lunch forum Nico Arancillo, assistant vice president for engineering and technical support, highlighted the company’s recent initiatives. These include the adoption of a looped substation system, construction of 80 circuit kilometers of sub-transmission lines, and deployment of Scada-enabled smart devices for remote monitoring and faster fault detection.
The utility has also installed semi-insulated “tree wires” and expanded vegetation management programs to minimize outages caused by foliage and debris. “By building capacity, strengthening reliability and embracing digital innovation, we aim to deliver smarter and more sustainable power for Cebu,” Arancillo said.
In line with its long-term modernization program, Visayan Electric has extended its underground distribution system, with completed works along Osmeña Boulevard and Fuente Osmeña, and new projects planned at South Road Properties.
Currently, the company serves more than 500,000 customers across its 674-square-kilometer franchise area, which includes the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay, and Naga, as well as the municipalities of Liloan, Consolacion, Minglanilla, and San Fernando.

As part of its 120th anniversary, Visayan Electric launched the “Legacy of Lights” exhibit at Ayala Center Cebu, running from September 22 to 28. The exhibition features photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia chronicling Cebu’s electrification journey.
