TotalEnergies and Veolia Expand Partnership to Advance Low-Carbon Energy, Water Reuse, and Resource Recovery

TotalEnergies and Veolia have signed a new memorandum of understanding to strengthen their partnership across energy transition and circular economy initiatives. The collaboration aims to scale up innovative processes, accelerate research on sustainability challenges, and support both companies’ goals of lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing their water footprint.

Under the agreement, Veolia will bring its expertise in water management and waste recovery, while TotalEnergies will contribute its capabilities in methane reduction and low-carbon energy production. Together, they will work on projects spanning emissions control, water efficiency, desalination, and resource recovery.

A key focus will be the deployment of TotalEnergies’ AUSEA drone technology to measure and reduce methane emissions from Veolia’s landfills, helping the company reach its target of 80% methane capture by 2032. The partnership will also expand wastewater reuse initiatives to help TotalEnergies achieve a 20% reduction in freshwater withdrawals by 2030 at sites in water-stressed areas. Additionally, both companies plan to advance the use of low-carbon energy in desalination, building on their successful solar-powered facility in Oman, and explore ways to recover critical minerals such as rare earth elements from waste streams used in renewable technologies like wind turbines and batteries.

“I am very pleased with the agreement signed today with TotalEnergies: by combining our expertise, whether in sustainable water management, the circular economy or the reduction of methane emissions, we are putting our innovation capabilities at the service of the ecological transformation and the competitiveness of our industries”, commented Estelle Brachlianoff, Veolia’s Chief Executive Officer.

“We are delighted with this partnership with Veolia. TotalEnergies has cutting-edge solutions and technologies to offer Veolia and vice versa. Together, we can make a concrete contribution to the energy transition and the circular economy. We are convinced that cooperations like those we are developing with Veolia are very useful to make tangible progress and sustainably limit the environmental footprint of our companies”, said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
