Kalpa Power Pvt. Ltd. Develops 2MW Solar Project as IIM Nagpur Moves Toward Net-Zero Campus

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur has taken a major step toward clean energy leadership with the development of a 2MW ground-mounted solar power plant, designed and developed by Kalpa Power Pvt. Ltd., Pune. This project, located at the institute’s Mihan campus, underscores IIM Nagpur’s commitment to sustainability while supporting India’s national renewable energy goals.

The solar park, spread across six acres within the institute’s 130-acre campus, is expected to drastically cut electricity expenses—from the current ₹25–30 lakh per month to nearly ₹6 lakh—by generating clean power for campus operations. This renewable energy infrastructure will play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and aligning the institute with India’s mission to accelerate solar adoption across non-industrial sectors.

IIM Nagpur has also announced a ₹250 crore Phase II campus expansion, designed entirely around renewable energy integration, eco-efficient infrastructure, and smart energy management systems. As part of its sustainability master plan, the institute has already planted over 8,000 native trees, implemented rainwater harvesting systems, and installed treated water recycling facilities to reduce freshwater consumption. The campus has earned a 4-Star GRIHA rating for sustainable construction practices.

Officials said that with the commissioning of the solar park, IIM Nagpur will be among the first higher education institutions in India to generate power at this scale, demonstrating how academic campuses can serve as models for renewable energy self-sufficiency.

By committing to a net-zero roadmap powered by solar energy, IIM Nagpur is not only reducing operational costs but also contributing to India’s clean energy transition—setting a precedent for educational institutions to adopt large-scale renewable infrastructure.
