Malaysia’s leading utility, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), has unveiled a multi-pronged strategy to accelerate its clean energy transition, reinforcing its commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. The company’s approach focuses on expanding renewable energy (RE) capacity, developing hybrid solar-hydro and hydrogen projects, and enhancing regional grid connectivity through the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).
TNB’s latest initiative includes the development of a hybrid hydro-floating solar and green hydrogen hub in Terengganu, part of a 2.5 GW hybrid renewable energy project launched earlier this year. This large-scale initiative integrates solar and hydro resources with hydrogen production to create a diversified and flexible energy mix.
The utility is also strengthening its role in the ASEAN Power Grid, which aims to improve cross-border electricity trade between countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. The interconnection projects are expected to support regional energy security while enabling the export and import of renewable power across Southeast Asia.
Under its carbon management roadmap, TNB targets a 5% reduction in emissions intensity starting in 2025. The company also plans to assist its industrial customers in lowering their Scope 2 emissions, positioning itself as both a power provider and a sustainability enabler.
“TNB’s transformation is guided by innovation, intelligence, and people. Building a sustainable energy ecosystem requires more than just infrastructure—it requires collaboration and connectivity,” the company said in a statement.
Analysts note that TNB’s diversified portfolio—spanning floating solar, hydrogen, and grid interconnections—marks a decisive step toward reducing reliance on fossil fuels while creating long-term regional opportunities. However, challenges such as high capital investment, regulatory hurdles, and cross-border coordination remain key factors to monitor as the projects advance.
With this initiative, TNB aims to position itself as a regional leader in renewable energy, aligning with ASEAN’s collective goal of achieving a resilient, interconnected, and low-carbon energy future.
