PM Modi Reaffirms India’s Commitment to Green Finance Leadership in Response to Ministerial Article on Reshaping Climate Finance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has endorsed an article by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav that argues for a transformative shift in global climate finance through greater transparency, common standards, and pragmatic policy frameworks. The article, underscores the urgent need to fix climate finance mechanisms ahead of escalating global climate challenges.

In the piece, Yadav emphasises that existing climate finance structures remain fragmented and inadequate, often burdened by unclear definitions, inconsistent reporting, and unmet commitments from developed nations. He highlights that India has demonstrated a viable pathway to reform by developing its draft Climate Finance Taxonomy and expanding domestic green finance. These initiatives, he notes, provide a structured, measurable, and transparent framework capable of guiding future international standards.

Responding to the article, Prime Minister Modi said India’s forward-looking initiatives represent “pragmatic leadership” at a time when global climate finance architecture requires urgent reform. “Union Minister highlights that there is a strong opportunity to reshape global climate finance with greater transparency and common standards. He points to India’s draft Climate Finance Taxonomy and growing domestic green finance as examples of pragmatic leadership that can guide a more effective global architecture for the future,” the Prime Minister posted.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as global climate negotiations increasingly focus on credible finance pathways for developing nations, especially regarding energy transition, adaptation, and loss-and-damage funding. India’s policy direction, as highlighted in the article, frames climate finance not merely as a monetary requirement but as a strategic tool for equitable and sustainable development.

By combining clear domestic frameworks with calls for internationally harmonised standards, the article — and Modi’s endorsement — positions India as a key contributor to shaping the next generation of global climate finance governance.
