Hon’ble Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh has virtually inaugurated NTPC’s 3.7 MW solar plant at Chushul, Ladakh, marking the launch of a pioneering solar–hydrogen-based microgrid system in one of India’s most challenging terrains. The project, commissioned in a record eight months, is designed to supply clean, reliable power to remote Army posts operating at high altitudes.

The innovative microgrid replaces diesel generator sets traditionally used in these isolated Himalayan locations, significantly cutting carbon emissions and enhancing energy security. The system enables local production and storage of green energy, eliminating the need to transport fuel from the plains. According to NTPC, every three units of power generated through the project will avoid transporting one litre of diesel to the region.

NTPC has developed a stand-alone hydrogen-based energy storage system capable of delivering 200 kW of round-the-clock power throughout the year. Situated at 4,500 metres above sea level, where winter temperatures plunge to –40°C, the facility is considered the world’s highest and most unique project of its kind. Once fully operational, it is expected to play a crucial role in decarbonising defence operations in high-altitude regions.

NTPC Ltd., which currently meets one-fourth of India’s power demand, has an installed capacity of 84,849 MW and an additional 30.90 GW under construction, including 13.3 GW of renewable energy capacity. The company aims to achieve 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, aligning with India’s long-term Net Zero commitments.

With a portfolio spanning thermal, hydro, solar, and wind assets, NTPC continues to expand its presence into emerging sectors such as e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro, waste-to-energy, nuclear power, and green hydrogen. The company emphasises innovation, clean energy transition, and sustainable practices as key pillars of its future growth.
