Google has entered into a 30 MW solar power agreement in Malaysia with a local unit of Japanese renewable energy company Shizen Energy. The solar farm, to be developed in Kedah state, is expected to become operational by 2027.

The project is part of Googleโ€™s broader strategy to secure renewable energy for its operations in Southeast Asia, including its energy-intensive data centres. It also aligns with Malaysiaโ€™s renewable energy ambitions, as the country aims to increase its green power capacity to 70% by 2050, up from about 26% currently.

Through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) like this, companies such as Google can ensure stable access to clean electricity while supporting local decarbonisation efforts. Shizen Energy, which has previously partnered with Microsoft and Google in Japan, continues to expand its footprint in corporate renewable energy projects across Asia.

This initiative underscores the growing role of tech giants in driving the adoption of clean energy in Southeast Asia, a region still heavily reliant on fossil fuels.
