The Department of Energy (DoE), through the Renewable Energy Management Bureau, convened key power sector stakeholders in Visayas and Mindanao as part of the second leg of the 2025 Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) Conference for On-Grid Areas, held in Cagayan de Oro City, to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and support compliance with mandated clean energy targets.

The conference brought together representatives from distribution utilities (DUs), retail electricity suppliers (RES) and generation companies (GenCos), which are mandated under the RPS framework to source a portion of their power from renewable energy. The initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of these entities to meet their renewable energy obligations and deliver cleaner and more affordable electricity to consumers.

Addressing the participants, Undersecretary Rowena Cristina L. Guevara underscored the critical role of the RPS in the countryโ€™s energy transition, describing the mandated participants as โ€œarchitects of energy for the masses.โ€ She highlighted the importance of equipping power sector players with up-to-date policy guidance, technical tools and institutional support to fast-track renewable energy deployment.

The conference featured program updates and technical discussions with support from sector institutions, including the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines, the National Transmission Corporation and the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities. These sessions were designed to enhance stakeholder understanding of RPS compliance mechanisms and market processes, enabling utilities and suppliers to better integrate renewable energy into their portfolios.

The DoE said the nationwide rollout of the RPS conference series in the coming weeks is expected to further strengthen compliance across regions, advance the countryโ€™s energy transition and expand access to reliable and sustainable power. The initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.โ€™s directive to ensure that energy remains accessible, affordable and sustainable for Filipino households and communities.
