ENGIE Named Preferred Bidder for 240 MW Solar Project and Pre-qualified for Future Power Transmission Projects in South Africa

ENGIE has announced the development of the 240 MW Corona photovoltaic (PV) project in Virginia, Free State, South Africa, which will supply renewable energy to the national grid. The project forms part of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s programme to procure additional generation capacity aimed at easing electricity shortages while supporting South Africa’s just energy transition.

The Corona PV project will add to ENGIE’s existing renewable energy portfolio in South Africa, which currently exceeds 1.2 GW of operational capacity across wind, solar and concentrated solar power (CSP) assets. During the construction and operational phases, the project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment, support enterprise development initiatives, and contribute to long-term economic activity in the local region.

Commenting on the development, Mohamed Hoosen, CEO and Managing Director of Renewables for Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA) at ENGIE, said the project is designed to deliver benefits beyond power generation, with a focus on creating lasting value for surrounding communities through local engagement and development.

Construction of the Corona PV power plant is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with commercial operations targeted for the fourth quarter of 2028.

Separately, ENGIE has been pre-qualified as one of seven preferred bidders by the South African government for the 2026 Independent Transmission Project (ITP) auction. The initiative is intended to accelerate investment in transmission infrastructure and strengthen the country’s electricity grid.

Hoosen noted that ENGIE’s participation in both renewable generation and transmission initiatives reflects the company’s long-term commitment to South Africa’s energy transition, highlighting the importance of advancing grid infrastructure alongside new generation capacity.
