RWE, one of the United Kingdomโ€™s leading energy generators, has announced the energisation of four solar and battery storage projects, marking the companyโ€™s first operational grid-connected solar sites in the UK. The projectsโ€”Langford in Devon, Cotmoor in Nottinghamshire, Doverdale in Worcestershire, and Laynes Wood in Gloucestershireโ€”add a combined 185 MW of solar capacity and 35 MW of battery storage, enough to supply electricity to more than 82,000 homes annually.

The four projects follow the successful commercial operations of Langford and Cotmoor and represent the start of RWEโ€™s UK solar pipeline, with nine additional projects currently under construction.

Katja Wรผnschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said: โ€œThe operation of our first four solar plants marks RWEโ€™s entry into solar generation in the UK and represents an important milestone for the growth of our business. These projects provide clean power for homes and businesses, support farming families with secure income, and work in partnership with local communities to drive energy-saving initiatives.โ€

RWE emphasises that its projects are designed to benefit both local communities and the environment while respecting local heritage and landscapes. The four solar sites will collectively provide ยฃ380,000 in Community Benefit funding, supporting initiatives such as solar PV installations on community buildings and schools, biodiversity enhancements, and educational opportunities.

Specific community-focused activities include:

  • Supporting local energy initiatives: Parish councils in Warwickshire, Devon, and Worcestershire received funding for solar PV installations on sports halls, village halls, and schools including Glebe Infants School and Picklenash Primary School.
  • Promoting biodiversity: Environmental improvements across the four sites include wetland restoration, tree and hedgerow planting, and wildlife-friendly infrastructure.
  • Educational programs: Doverdale will host an onsite โ€˜outdoor classroomโ€™ for local schoolchildren to learn about renewable energy and sustainability.

Solar power provides a sustainable and secure electricity source, supporting the UKโ€™s long-term energy security. RWEโ€™s ongoing UK solar projects demonstrate the companyโ€™s commitment to delivering low-cost, rapidly deployable renewable energy that benefits both communities and the natural environment.
