Juniper Green Energy has commissioned 60 MWh of its 100 MWh merchant Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Bikaner in Rajasthan, marking the operational launch of India’s first merchant BESS, the company said on December 24, 2025.

The project, developed through Juniper Green Energy’s subsidiary Juniper Green Cosmic Private Limited, has completed trial operations and received approval from the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC). Commercial operations for the commissioned capacity began on December 24, 2025.

The remaining 40 MWh of capacity is expected to be commissioned shortly. Once the full 100 MWh becomes operational, the facility will rank among the largest operational BESS projects in India. The merchant BESS is expected to generate revenues through peak power arbitrage, grid balancing services and participation in ancillary services markets.

In parallel, Juniper Green Energy has already installed an additional 400 MWh of BESS capacity at Fatehgarh in Rajasthan, which is targeted for commissioning by the first quarter of 2026. The company said this will further strengthen its energy storage portfolio and enhance long-term growth visibility.

Juniper Green Energy highlighted that battery energy storage systems are a critical enabler of India’s energy transition, supporting grid stability, renewable energy integration, peak demand management and more efficient use of transmission infrastructure. As part of its long-term strategy, the company plans to deploy BESS capacity across its solar projects connected to the interstate transmission system (ISTS), creating an integrated renewable-plus-storage platform.

Ankush Malik, Chief Executive Officer of Juniper Green Energy, said the commissioning of the company’s first merchant BESS demonstrates its execution capabilities and strategic focus on emerging opportunities in energy storage. He added that BESS represents a value-accretive asset class that complements the company’s renewable energy portfolio while supporting grid reliability.

Juniper Green Energy is an independent renewable power producer in India with a focus on utility-scale solar, wind and hybrid projects. As of June 2025, the company’s operational renewable energy capacity stood at approximately 1.45 GWp.
