NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a leading Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, has announced a major initiative to expand its renewable energy presence in India. On January 12, 2026, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Gujarat during the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference for the Saurashtra and Kutch Region held in Rajkot. The agreement aims to develop large-scale renewable energy projects across the state, signaling a strong commitment to green energy growth.

The MoU was formally signed by Shri Devendra Pratap Singh, Executive Director and CEO of NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), and Smt. Bhakthi Shamal, Joint Secretary of the Energy & Petrochemicals Department, Government of Gujarat. The event saw the presence of prominent officials, including Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, along with ministers from the Gujarat state government.

Although the MoU is non-binding, it lays out an ambitious vision for renewable energy development in Gujarat. The partnership will focus on a range of projects, including solar, wind, and hybrid power installations, as well as Battery Energy Storage Projects. The total investment potential of these initiatives is estimated at around ₹25,000 crore. In addition to boosting clean energy generation, the projects are expected to create significant employment opportunities in the region.

NLC India Renewables Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NLCIL, will take the lead in implementing these projects. NIRL was established specifically to drive NLCIL’s green energy growth and sustainability goals. This initiative forms part of NLCIL’s broader corporate strategy to achieve a total renewable energy capacity of 10 GW by 2030. By investing in these projects, the company is reinforcing its focus on energy security, decarbonization, and supporting India’s national target of Net Zero emissions.

The Government of Gujarat has committed to supporting NLCIL and NIRL in navigating the regulatory framework required for these projects. This includes facilitating statutory approvals, clearances, and registrations in line with state policies. Such cooperation is expected to ensure the timely execution of the projects and strengthen Gujarat’s position as a major renewable energy hub in India.

This collaboration between NLCIL and the Gujarat government represents a key milestone in India’s transition toward sustainable and non-fossil fuel-based power generation. It highlights the growing importance of public-private partnerships in achieving the country’s renewable energy targets while promoting economic growth and job creation.
