Uniper–AM Green Deal Marks India–Europe’s Largest Green Ammonia Supply Partnership

German energy major Uniper and India’s AM Green Ammonia have entered a long-term agreement to supply green ammonia from India to Europe, marking a significant milestone in the global energy transition. Signed on January 12, 2026, in Ahmedabad, the deal involves exporting up to 500,000 tons of renewable ammonia per year. The agreement was exchanged in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, underscoring the strategic importance of energy cooperation between the two countries.

The green ammonia will be produced at AM Green’s first large-scale plant in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, which is currently under construction. The facility is designed to have a capacity of one million tons per annum, and the first shipments to Europe are expected to begin by 2028. The project aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to make the country a global hub for the production and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

For Uniper, this deal represents a key step in diversifying its renewable and low-carbon fuel portfolio. The company plans to supply European customers with a reliable source of green molecules that can help decarbonize heavy industries such as chemicals, fertilizers, and refining. Green ammonia is considered highly effective for reducing carbon emissions in these sectors due to its mature production process and its ability to serve both as a direct feedstock and a carrier for hydrogen.

The ammonia supplied under this agreement will comply with strict European standards for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO). To achieve this, AM Green has developed a unique energy system combining wind and solar power with pumped hydro storage. This configuration ensures a steady and carbon-free electricity supply to the plant, allowing efficient operation while maintaining a minimal carbon footprint.

Leaders from both companies highlighted that the partnership is more than a commercial arrangement; it represents one of the first large-scale green energy corridors between India and Europe. Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper, emphasized that green ammonia offers some of the lowest costs for avoiding CO2 emissions compared to other renewable solutions. Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, Founder of AM Green, stated that the agreement demonstrates India’s capability to deliver high-quality, competitive renewable fuels on a global scale.

The Kakinada project is expected to generate significant environmental and economic benefits. It could help avoid approximately two million tons of CO2 emissions annually and create over 600 local jobs. By aligning the supply of green ammonia with growing European demand for clean energy, the collaboration sets a new benchmark for international cooperation in addressing climate change.

This partnership highlights the growing importance of green hydrogen and ammonia as key tools in achieving global net-zero targets. The deal also reflects India’s expanding role in renewable energy exports, while supporting Europe’s transition toward low-carbon industrial fuels. The successful implementation of the Kakinada project could inspire further large-scale collaborations between energy producers and consumers across continents, accelerating the shift to sustainable energy solutions worldwide.
