GCL System Integration (GCL SI) has successfully completed a joint floating solar energy project in collaboration with its long-term partner Ocean Sun at the Soneva Secret resort in the Maldives.
The project deploys over 4,200 TOPCon marine floating modules supplied by GCL SI and is expected to provide up to 90% of the resort’s electricity needs, fully replacing diesel generators upon completion.
Officials estimate that the initiative will save approximately 1 million liters of diesel annually and reduce carbon emissions by over 2,000 tons. The project represents a critical step for islands and remote communities seeking economically viable energy independence through clean energy sources.
Floating Solar: A Solution for Islands
Power generation on islands has historically relied on diesel generators. Limited land and roof space have made scaling renewable energy projects challenging, often increasing costs and restricting economic development. To address these challenges, GCL SI leveraged its expertise in offshore solar projects, offering solutions tailored to marine environments.
The GCL-NT10/60GT Monocrystalline Module, developed specifically for marine applications, is designed to withstand harsh conditions including high salinity, humidity, ultraviolet exposure, and strong wind and wave loads. Key features include:
Anti-corrosion frames: Enhanced coating and fatigue-resistant design for durability in high-salt conditions.
Double-coated glass: Increases resistance to wind and waves while minimizing water ingress and salt crystallization.
Highly waterproof junction boxes: Protects against water, salt spray, and improves heat dissipation.
Dual-layer POE encapsulant film: Enhances moisture barriers, PID resistance, and UV stability.
Four-buckle connector design: Strengthens connection stability and sealing, reducing electrical risks.
The modules have passed stringent TÜV Rheinland certifications, with power degradation well below IEC standards, ensuring long-term reliable operation.
Global Implications
The milestone highlights GCL SI’s technical capabilities in offshore photovoltaics and demonstrates the practical feasibility of floating solar solutions for islands. With hundreds of resort islands in the Maldives and countless other island communities globally still dependent on diesel, this project presents a scalable model for clean and resilient energy systems.
By replacing diesel generators with marine-adapted photovoltaic modules, GCL SI has paved a practical pathway for decarbonization and sustainable development in remote coastal regions.
