JIVO Energy Solarizes Irrigation Water Pumps To Support Rice Farming In Northern Senegal

JIVO Energy has completed the solarization of five water pumping systems used for irrigation in northern Senegal, marking an important step toward sustainable agriculture in the region. The project involved installing solar PV systems on existing water pumps that support irrigation for rice farming communities. By shifting these pumps to solar power, the project reduces dependence on conventional energy sources and ensures a more reliable and cost-effective water supply for farmers.

The initiative was financed by the Qatar Government Fund for Development and implemented under the Solar Irrigation for Climate Smart Agriculture in the Senegal River Valley project. Procurement and project coordination were managed by the Global Green Growth Institute. The solar-powered irrigation systems are now supporting farms managed by SAED and Falรฉmรฉ, two key agencies responsible for land development and agricultural operations in the Senegal River Delta and valley regions.

The work covered five different locations across two regions. Three sites are located in the Podor region, namely Guรฉdรฉ-Chantier, Ngoro Fanaye, and Diomandou. The remaining two sites, Kobilo and Orkadiรจre, are situated in the Matam region. Together, these installations have a total solar capacity of around 650 kW, which is being used directly to operate irrigation pumps for rice cultivation.

Access to water is a major challenge for farmers in northern Senegal, especially due to high fuel costs, unreliable power supply, and the impacts of climate change. By solarizing the water pumps, the project provides farmers with a steady and clean source of energy for irrigation. This allows water to be pumped without ongoing fuel expenses, helping to lower operating costs and improve farm productivity.

The project also supports Senegalโ€™s wider goals of promoting clean energy and building climate-resilient agriculture. Solar-powered irrigation reduces carbon emissions while strengthening food security in rural areas. For local farmers, the initiative offers long-term benefits through improved water access, stable crop production, and reduced energy-related risks. Overall, the project highlights how renewable energy solutions can play a practical role in supporting sustainable agriculture and rural development in Africa.
