JIVO Energy has completed the installation of the first hybrid off-grid energy system in Sierra Leone to supply electricity to the Moyamba Town Mini-Grid. This landmark project marks an important step in improving access to reliable power in the country, especially for communities not connected to the national grid.
The project was financed by the World Bank and implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). The work was carried out over a period of 20 months, followed by an additional year of operations and maintenance support to ensure smooth functioning of the system and build local capacity.
The hybrid energy system is fully off-grid and combines multiple power sources to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply. It includes a 954.8 kilowatt-peak solar photovoltaic plant, a 2032.128 kilowatt-hour battery energy storage system, and a 500 kilovolt-ampere diesel generator. These components work together to provide stable and continuous power, even during periods of low sunlight or high demand.
With this system now operational, Moyamba Town is receiving reliable and independent electricity for the first time through a modern hybrid mini-grid. The improved power supply is expected to support households, small businesses, health facilities, schools, and other essential services. It also opens up new opportunities for economic activities and job creation in the town.
The successful completion of this project highlights the growing role of renewable energy and hybrid systems in addressing energy challenges in Sierra Leone. It also demonstrates how international cooperation and private sector expertise can support the country’s move toward sustainable, resilient, and inclusive energy infrastructure.
