Mumbai is set to receive an additional 1,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity following the completion of the Kudus–Aarey High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission corridor, a major infrastructure project aimed at strengthening the city’s power supply and supporting its clean energy transition.
The project, developed by Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL), enables Mumbai to import large volumes of renewable energy from power-rich states such as Gujarat and Rajasthan. The new transmission link is expected to become operational by March 2026, significantly enhancing the city’s access to green power while improving grid stability and reliability.
Built using 320 kV Voltage Source Converter (VSC) HVDC technology, the corridor spans approximately 80 kilometres, including overhead transmission lines and extensive underground cabling through densely populated urban zones. The use of HVDC technology allows for precise control of power flow, improved voltage stability, and reduced transmission losses—an important upgrade for a high-demand metropolitan grid like Mumbai’s.
City officials note that Mumbai’s electricity demand is projected to exceed 4,500 MW in the near term, driven by rapid urban growth, commercial expansion, and increasing electric vehicle adoption. The Kudus–Aarey project is designed to help meet this rising demand while reducing dependence on fossil fuel-based power sources.
The new corridor follows the commissioning of the Kharghar–Vikhroli transmission line in 2023, which also added 1,000 MW of capacity to Mumbai’s grid. Together, these projects form a critical backbone for the city’s long-term energy security and sustainability goals.
Energy experts view the Kudus–Aarey HVDC link as a key step toward integrating more renewable energy into Mumbai’s power mix, reinforcing the city’s position in India’s broader clean energy transition.
The project was awarded to AESL under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mechanism, with REC Power Development & Consultancy Ltd. (RECPDCL) serving as the bid process coordinator. https://solarquarter.com/2025/01/21/adani-energy-solutions-secures-landmark-%e2%82%b925000-crore-hvdc-project-to-strengthen-indias-renewable-energy-transmission/
