The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reported substantial progress in renewable energy deployment, electric traction expansion, and operational safety enhancements during the current financial year, reflecting its push toward sustainable and modern railway operations.

According to railway officials, NFR has significantly increased its rooftop solar power capacity, commissioning more than 9 MWp of new installations by December 2025. This represents the highest annual solar capacity addition recorded by the zone to date, bringing its total cumulative solar capacity to approximately 18.4 MWp. The expansion supports Indian Railwaysโ€™ broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and lowering dependence on conventional energy sources.

In parallel, NFR has accelerated its transition to electric traction, converting 31 train pairs from diesel to full electric operations. This shift has led to the release of 26 diesel locomotives, contributing to fuel savings and improved energy efficiency. To strengthen locomotive operations, new Trip Inspection (TRIP) sheds have also been commissioned at New Jalpaiguri and Dibrugarh, improving maintenance and turnaround times for electric locomotives.

Operational safety has been another key focus area. NFR has expanded the deployment of the indigenous โ€˜Kavachโ€™ Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, equipping dozens of electric locomotives with the technology to enhance accident prevention. Additionally, night-time sectional videography has been introduced across multiple divisions to improve track monitoring, hazard detection, and staff awareness.

Railway authorities stated that these initiatives collectively mark a major step toward cleaner energy adoption, safer train operations, and more efficient rail services in the Northeast. The developments align with Indian Railwaysโ€™ long-term vision of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter while improving reliability and passenger safety.
