Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Mostafa Madbouly and Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, to review preparations for securing electricity supply during the upcoming summer amid rising demand on the national grid.
According to Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, the meeting focused on the Ministry’s plan to ensure grid stability and continuous supply as electricity consumption is projected to increase by 6% to 7% during the summer months.
Minister Esmat stated that approximately 3,000 megawatts (MW) of new solar energy capacity will be added this year. In addition, 600 MW of battery energy storage capacity will be introduced before summer, raising the total available storage-linked capacity on the grid to 1,100 MW.
President El-Sisi stressed the importance of accommodating rising and unprecedented consumption levels while maintaining grid stability, ensuring uninterrupted supply, addressing violations, and expanding renewable energy’s share in the national energy mix. He also emphasized adherence to quality standards and economic operation.
The meeting further reviewed efforts to modernize and upgrade Egypt’s electricity system. The Minister confirmed that the national grid operates in line with high-quality standards and remains capable of meeting residential, commercial, and industrial demand. Over the past year, 34 new transformer stations across various voltage levels were completed and connected to the unified grid, alongside expansions at 40 additional stations. Authorities also installed 194,000 kilometers of distribution lines and 5,610 kilometers of transmission lines.
Progress on renewable energy projects was also discussed, with officials confirming that Egypt has completed a significant portion of its strategy to increase renewables’ contribution to at least 42% of total electricity generation by 2030, ahead of schedule.
The session also addressed electricity interconnection projects with neighboring countries, as Egypt advances its ambition to become a regional energy hub. In this context, the Minister highlighted the electricity interconnection project with Saudi Arabia, noting that the first phase—providing 1,500 MW—is scheduled to be energized in time to support the national grid during the summer of 2026.
President El-Sisi directed continued efforts to meet the energy needs of productive and service sectors, support industrial continuity, attract new investments, and improve operational efficiency. He also underscored the importance of reducing technical and commercial losses, cutting fuel consumption, expanding renewable energy deployment, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and localizing the manufacturing of electrical equipment while transferring modern technologies.
The meeting reflects Egypt’s ongoing strategy to strengthen grid resilience, accelerate renewable energy integration, and enhance long-term energy security.
