A Rising Star – Middle East is Leaving the Path of Fossil Fuel Dependence

From oil to sun: The MENA region is emerging as a global powerhouse in solar energy. With unparalleled solar potential, countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan are the top solar energy producers in the MENA region, driven by massive utility-scale projects and ambitious transition strategies.
The Middle East is undergoing a profound transformation of its energy landscape. Once almost fully reliant on fossil fuels, the region is now positioning solar power at the center of its diversification and sustainability agenda. According to Middle East Solar Industry Association MESIA’s Solar Outlook Report 2025, solar energy still represents only about 2% of the regional energy mix in the MENA region (including Northern Africa), compared to 87% for fossil fuels, yet growth has been remarkable. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) states in “Renewable Energy Statistics 2025” that installed solar energy capacity in the Middle East region grew by 18 % from 2023 to 2024 to 23,6 GW. Projections of the International Energy Agency state that capacity in the MENA region could tenfold to 200 GW by 2035.
